A Lesson in Economics & Welfare

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never fai...led a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan". All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little..

The second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. It could not be any simpler than that.

Remember, there IS a test coming up. The 2012 elections.

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

A Blessed Thanksgiving To You All!

Over the past few years, I have used this time of year to post President Abraham Lincoln's "Thanksgiving Proclamation" as a reminder to what this holiday should be. However, even earlier President George Washington established a day of thanks, which you don't see posted often. Here it is for your reading. Happy Thanksgiving, and may we be grateful for the many blessings we have from the Lord!

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor -- and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me "to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness."

Even though the following list was attributed to President Abraham Lincoln, actually it was published in 1916 by the Rev. William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian minister. Our politicians would be wise to heed these truths today!

1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong

3. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.

4. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

5. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.

Charles J. Sykes offered the following words of wisdom:

Rule No. 1: Life is not fair. Get used to it. The average teen-ager uses the phrase "It's not fair" 8.6 times a day. You got it from your parents, who said it so often you decided they must be the most idealistic generation ever. When they started hearing it from their own kids, they realized Rule No. 1.

Rule No. 2: The real world won't care as much about your self-esteem as much as your school does. It'll expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself. This may come as a shock. Usually, when inflated self-esteem meets reality, kids complain that it's not fair. (See Rule No. 1)

Rule No. 3: Sorry, you won't make $40,000 a year right out of high school. And you won't be a vice president or have a car phone either. You may even have to wear a uniform that doesn't have a Gap label.

Rule No. 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait 'til you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure, so he tends to be a bit edgier. When you screw up, he's not going to ask you how you feel about it.

Rule No. 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity. They weren't embarrassed making minimum wage either. They would have been embarrassed to sit around talking about Kurt Cobain all weekend.

Rule No. 6: It's not your parents' fault. If you screw up, you are responsible. This is the flip side of "It's my life," and "You're not the boss of me," and other eloquent proclamations of your generation. When you turn 18, it's on your dime. Don't whine about it, or you'll sound like a baby boomer.

Rule No. 7: Before you were born your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way paying your bills, cleaning up your room and listening to you tell them how idealistic you are. And by the way, before you save the rain forest from the blood-sucking parasites of your parents' generation, try delousing the closet in your bedroom.

Rule No. 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers. Life hasn't. In some schools, they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. Failing grades have been abolished and class valedictorians scrapped, lest anyone's feelings be hurt. Effort is as important as results. This, of course, bears not the slightest resemblance to anything in real life. (See Rule No. 1, Rule No. 2 and Rule No. 4.)

Rule No. 9: Life is not divided into semesters, and you don't get summers off. Not even Easter break. They expect you to show up every day. For eight hours. And you don't get a new life every 10 weeks. It just goes on and on. While we're at it, very few jobs are interested in fostering your self-expression or helping you find yourself. Fewer still lead to self-realization. (See Rules No. 1 and No. 2.)

Rule No. 10: Television is not real life. Your life is not a sitcom. Your problems will not all be solved in 30 minutes, minus time for commercials. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop to go to jobs. Your friends will not be as perky or pliable as Jennifer Aniston.

Rule No. 11: Be nice to nerds. You may end up working for them. We all could.

Rule No. 12: Smoking (or drug use) does not make you look cool. It makes you look moronic. Next time you're out cruising, watch an 11-year-old with a butt in his mouth. That's what you look like to anyone over 20. Ditto for "expressing yourself" with purple hair and/or pierced body parts.

Rule No. 13: You are not immortal. (See Rule No. 12.) If you are under the impression that living fast, dying young and leaving a beautiful corpse is romantic, you obviously haven't seen one of your peers at room temperature lately.

Rule No. 14: Enjoy this while you can. Sure parents are a pain, school's a bother, and life is depressing. But someday you'll realize how wonderful it was to be a kid. Maybe you should start now. You're welcome.

"I'm 73 and I'm Tired"

I'm 73. Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce and a six-month period when I was between jobs (but job-hunting every day), I've worked, hard, since I was 18. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there's no retirement in sight, and I'm tired. Very tired.
I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it.
I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honor"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers;" of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery;" of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari’a law tells them to.
I'm tired of being told that, out of "tolerance for other cultures," we must let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and mandrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in America and Canada, while no American nor Canadian group is allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia to teach love and tolerance.
I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate.
I'm tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses while they tried to fight it off?
I'm tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of both parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting caught. I'm tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.

I'm real tired of people who don't take responsibility for their lives and actions. I'm tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination or big-whatever for their problems.
Yes, I'm damn tired. But I'm also glad to be 73. Because, mostly, I'm not going to have to see the world these people are making. I'm just sorry for my granddaughters and grandson.

I've been busy last week with ministering to a good friend at church whose 19-year-old nephew was killed in action in Afghanistan. I stood for SFC Rudy Acosta's funeral procession with 30,000 other community members of Santa Clarita holding signs and flags last Thursday. Our local radio station asked people to upload photos, and they posted all five of mine here, My photos are #4-8. It was a very moving experience. I also organized and gathered squares for a Heartmade Blessings assembler to make into a comfortghan for the family. I am sending her 7 squares from people locally who knew Rudy and/or the family. There was a car wash last Saturday by the seniors from Santa Clarita Christian School, the school Rudy attended, to raise funds for the family. It's all been a sadly special week for a special young man. But the best news is, he was a committed Christian! So Rudy is with his Savior, and I look forward to meeting him in Glory!

At last week's square dance class, there was a reporter and photographer from The Signal, our local Santa Clarita newspaper. I imagine they were there to write a brief article about the new class, and perhaps include a photo. Well, the story appeared in yesterday's paper, on page one, and included this photo plus one other!

Whoops, I haven't been keeping this up to date, have I? As you know, the Ducks lost a heart-breaker at the BCS game, but it was a fun game to watch. Congrats to Auburn who simply outplayed the Ducks. It will be intetesting to see what happens next year since our two key players will be returning. Go Ducks!

My Oregon Ducks will be playing for the national championship this Monday. Kickoff time is 5:30 p.m. PST. The game is being played near Phoeniz, Arizona, and it would have been a blast to attend in person. But . . . as I watched the ticket prices slowly rise from $650 to $900 to $1,000 to its current price of $5,000 (yikes!) I just can't justify that kind of expense. And who wants to go to the stadium only to listen to the game from the parking lot!

So a few of us are gathering at a friend's house to watch the game on a nice, large flat screen TV to (hopefuly!) root Oregon to victory. Go Ducks!

Amtrak Train Trip to Solvang, California

Two friends and I took the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from Simi Valley (SIM) to Santa Barbara (SBA), then a connecting bus to Solvang (SLV). Here’s a report on our trip.

The northbound Pacific Surfliner Train #763 was right on time, and we choose a 4-seater around a table for our trip north. Part of this route takes us right next to the ocean. Although it was overcast, the clouds were high enough to enjoy the view of the waves breaking onto the beach. The announcements for each station were clear and helpful (“Next stop, Oxnard in about 10 minutes”). A mid-morning snack of bagel and coffee was served by a friendly and attentive snack bar attendant. We detrained at Santa Barbara, and walked to the front of the station to catch Thruway Bus #4763 to Solvang.

I have never stayed overnight in this quaint Danish town (founded 1911), but we certainly guessed right on the hotel! Four short blocks from the bus stop is the Hotel C orque. I can’t help but guess that the name takes its cue from nearby Wine Country (hence, the “cork” reference)! I have to say that this was one of the finest hotels in which I have stayed! Recently remodeled, the rooms are large and comfortable, the lobby is classy, and every staff member I spoke with went “above and beyond” in friendliness, restaurant suggestions, and accommodating our needs. Everything in town is within walking distance, as well, from the old Mission Santa Inez to the east, to downtown Solvang to the west.

We enjoyed strolling around Solvang with its interesting archetechture and quaint shops. And even a drinking fountain for adults, children, and our four-legged friends!

Lunch was at Café Angelica where we enjoyed a light salad with great service.

The connecting restaurant to Hotel Corque is Root 246, another take-off from the main highway through town, State Route 246. Prices were on the higher end of medium, but the food and service were top-notch! The waiter “hovered” and wanted to chit-chat a bit too often, but I’ve never had a better meal, ever! And for dessert, since I do not eat refined sugar, the chef kindly created a fresh fruit dish on request. I will return to the Hotel Corque and Root 246 on my next visit to Solvang.

Breakfast was at Paula’s Pancake House on Mission Drive. Great service, delicious food, and the word is out—there is always a waiting list to be seated!

After a late lunch at Mustard Seed, we walked across the street to the park and waited for Amtrak Thruway Bus #4796 to take us back to Santa Barbara. The bus was about 15 minutes late, but we arrived at the Santa Barbara station in plenty of time to catch the southbound Pacific Surfliner Train #796 back to Simi Valley. We boarded a Coach car, found it crowded, so walked to the next car and settled in. Once the train started moving, an announcement was made that this was a Business Class car, and if we didn’t have a Business Class ticket, we would have to move back to another car. Instead of gathering up our luggage and traipsing back to a Coach car with no guarantee we could sit together, we opted to pay the $10 upgrade each, to remain in Business Class. This was the only negative aspect of our trip. The doors between Coach Class and Business Class should be closed, and/or well-marked so passengers know they are moving between classes.

We arrived in Simi Valley about 15 minutes late (due to waiting for two Metrolink trains to pass), and we are already talking about replicating this lovely trip in the future!

Fall Is in the Air

It's so nice to have cooler weather these days. I hope it sticks around this time. I'm looking forward to spending some quality crochet time in front of the fireplace with a cat on my lap--my favorite time of year!

What "They" Say Is True

You know how "they" say you should never bump a glass coffee carafe against the side of your sink because it might break? Well, "they" are correct! Yep, I managed to cut my little finger on the left hand while I was washing my Mr. Coffee glass pot. Apparently, it broke when I bumped it (which "they" say you should never do) and I did not realize it. So, as you can see, I put a nice slice on my finger!

I thought it would just heal on its own, but after 24 hours it was still oozing every time I bent my finger, so I went to Urgent Care to have them take care of it. (Side note: one could collapse on the floor and permanently expire in the time it takes one to fill out all the required paperwork . . . but that's another post.)

After a dollop of Super Glue and a tetanus shot, and a splint, I'm good to go. Well, I can't crochet very well because I can't grip the yarn in my left hand, so I may have to readjust how I hold the yarn, and typing with the splint is a challenge (do you realize how many words have the letters A in them?), but hopefully I'll be back to my old self soon.

Moral of the story: Be careful when you are washing things made out of glass!

Update on Stephen Sturz, 7/14

The minor eye surgery on Monday went very well. His eye is still bloodshot and painful from the procedure, but the doctors said everything looks good, Stephen's vision is not as blurry, and he should heal quickly. We praise the Lord for the good reports, and continue to pray that Steve will be back in ministry soon!

Stephen Sturz update: 7/12

Today at 3:00 p.m. PDT, Stephen will undergo an outpatient surgical procedure whereby the doctor will tack down the corner of his eye so that it will be partially closed. This will make it possible to close his eye completely, and thus, heal faster (and hopefully not require constant drops of "artificial tears" and antibiotics). Please pray for a quick recovery, that this surgery will be successful, and his eye will continue to heal. Thank you!

P.S. Stephen wrote the following paragraph which was read yesterday in church:

Dear Grace Family,

I have never before been so encouraged, prayed for and loved as I have these past two months by you. My heart is overflowing with gratitude to the Lord for your generous ministry to me.

I'm getting stronger by the day and I'm very eager to get back to the music ministry. I know the Lord will bring that about in His perfect time. Thank you so much for your continued prayers on my behalf.

Stephen Sturz visit

I spent Independence Day visiting Steve and his family, down in a community where fireworks are legal. However, some of the neighbors took "safe 'n' sane" to a whole new level, and were blasting off illegal fireworks that were way too dangerous to remain outside. So we spent most of the evening indoors.

Steve is doing well! He progresses, albeit slowly, and is working with his ophthalmologist on a regular basis to solve the vision issues. When I told friends at church that I was going to visit Steve, they all asked me to pass along their love, prayers, and greetings. I'm so glad he has not been forgotten.

Hurry back, Steve -- we miss you!

Update on Stephen Sturz, 6/22

I've been away for a week, but have kept in touch with Stephen via phone and text messages. He has had three appointments with the ophthalmologist, and each time she has noticed an improvement. He now can distinguish letters with his left eye, but is still sensitive to bright lights, which results in headaches. So he takes his daily strolls after dusk.

He also had a follow-up with his GP, who is encouraged by his progress. Please keep him in your prayers. He is anxious and motivated to do what it takes to be back in ministry, where he longs to be!

Stephen is staying at his brother's home, gaining strength daily, taking walks, playing an electronic keyboard, and working toward his goal of returning to his wonderful music ministry! At this point, there is no need to post further updates until there is something new to report (like his first Sunday back at Grace Church!). Steve continues to be overwhelmed by everyone's support. Cards may be mailed to him c/o Grace Church Music Department, and continued prayers are appreciated!

Last night Stephen was discharged from the hospital (praise!). He will be staying at his family's home in Lakewood during the rest of his recovery time, armed with a handfull of exercises to do. Balance is no longer an issue, and he will visit an opthamologist soon to deal with vision issues.

At this point, there may not be as many updates as Steve continues to improve. He is anxious to get back to playing (we're now shopping for a portable keyboard!) and wants to return to his music ministry at Grace Church. And we look forward to his return!

One of the physical therapists at this rehab location is a member of Grace Church, so he knows how valuable Stephen is to our music ministry! It looks like Stephen will be discharged (or, as he puts it, "paroled") to home care either today or tomorrow (to be decided this morning). Will post when they decide.

Physical therapy continued through the weekend (a good thing!) and Stephen was given a print out of some exercises he can do throughout the day. His balance is improving remarkably, but there is some residual facial paralysis and vision problems in one eye. These will lessen as time and therapy progresses, but here is a specific prayer request: that our gracious Lord will completely heal these issues and restore our dear friend back to complete health. God is able, and we are praying!

Stephen continues his rehab and physical therapy. The doctors are so encouraged, he may be discharged to home care later this week! He is very motivated, working on some balance issues and facial muscle exercises, and hopes to be back on the organ bench soon. Thank you for your continued prayers!

Yesterday I was amazed at the progress Stephen has made in dealing with balance issues while walking--big improvement! Physical therapy will continue next week after the holiday, and they can sense his motivation to work hard and be successful. But he still has a way to go, so please keep praying for a quick and complete recovery.

His family will come up today, and visitors do tire him out, so I'm taking today day off while trying not to feel guilty about it. :-)

Stephen was transferred to an acute rehab center last night and will begin daily, intensive rehabilitation today. He is anxious to get started! The doctors say his progress so far has been excellent, making his prognosis very promising. They have no idea how many saints have been praying for this special brother in Christ!

Yesterday, while chatting with a friend on the phone, Steve said, "The Lord has blessed me beyond measure thus far; how could I not trust Him for what the future holds?" Amen and Amen!

Mostly likely, Stephen will be moved to a rehab unit some time today. He continues to improve slowly, and while there are some post-op complications, as there always are, we are praying these will lessen with physical therapy and the natural healing process of the body. As Steve said yesterday, "This is not about me, it's about what the Lord is accomplishing in me." Keep praying that our good and gracious Lord will miraculously and completely heal Stephen so he can minister to us in music very soon!

Stayed with Stephen for most of the day. He is more rested these days, sitting in a chair, working with the physical therapist twice a day, and hopes to be transferred to the rehab unit at the hospital. We are awaiting the insurance company to sign-off on this plan (and you know how that can go . . . now there's a specific prayer request!).

Last night I was reading the Psalms while listening to a recording of my good friend, Stephen Sturz, playing beautiful Bach fugues. What a talent God has blessed that man with, and we look forward to his return to our church organ bench. I know he does, too! He continues to be blessed and overwhelmed by everyone's support and prayers. Keep 'em coming!

How to pray specifically for Steve today? That he will get some much-needed rest so he can heal quickly. Thank you!

Stephen just came out of surgery. They found an acoustic neuroma, which is a benign tumor. The surgeon thinks he got it all, and they are keeping Stephen sedated all night tonight to give him a chance to heal. We will have more information tomorrow when he is awakened.

Some personal thoughts this morning, 5/21

Today my dear friend, Stephen Sturz, has surgery to remove a benign meningioma from the base of his brain. In spending time with him each day this week, I have seen his faith become stronger, his confidence in the Lord grow, and his spirit become calm and joyful. I think I'm more anxious and worried than he, and frankly, it puts me to shame. This experience has broadened my prayer life, and will continue to do so in the future.

Our fervent prayer, of course, is that the Lord will completely heal Steve so he can return to his ministry of music for many years to come. God holds Steve in His loving care, and He is already there, guiding the hands of the surgeon and nursing staff. We all will come through this trial with stronger faith and greater confidence in the absolute sovereignty of the Lord Jesus Christ. May His will be done, and the name of the Lord be glorified!

On a brighter note, I've lost 4 pounds this week, and got some serious cardio-work in by foregoing the elevator and taking several flights of stairs up and down at the hospital!

It looks like surgery is scheduled for noon tomorrow (Friday), pending clearance from the cardiologist. Steve continues to be grateful for all your prayers and expressions of love and support. He is overwhelmed by the Lord's goodness, His power, and His sovereign grace through these circumstances. Keep those prayers coming!

Surgery still has not been scheduled. The neurologist has yet to give the final go-ahead, perhaps to run a few more tests. It won't be tomorrow (Thursday) because the surgeon is already booked.

In the meantime, Steve took a stroll around the floor today (I.V. pole on one side, me on the other), and is enjoying his personal quiet time of prayer and Bible study. Although he is anxious to be done with the surgery, he knows it is all in God's perfect timing and care. "I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined to me, and heard my cry." (Psalm 40:1)

Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) or Thursday. The explanation from the neurosurgeon was hopeful and Steve is anxious to get it done. Now we are waiting for clearance from the neurologist and another MRI to be scheduled.

It’s early Tuesday morning, and I’m home at a “real” computer, without the 160-character limit that my phone has, so I can post a more verbose update. Steve’s sister and brother have been here the last two days, including a sister-in-law who is an RN, and who has been very helpful in asking the right questions, and explaining some of the medical terms and descriptions. It’s like a foreign language!

He should have the last test results back today and then discuss options with the doctor. I have read every one of your comments and posts to Steve, and he is overwhelmed and humbly grateful by the love and prayers shown to him by you all!

Steve is getting excellent care, and the staff have been so kind. There won’t be anything to update until this evening, after the neurosurgeon stops by. In the meantime, thank you for your continued prayers. Steve is encouraged by the positive reports so far, and he is using this opportunity to share the Gospel with those around him. May God be glorified and His name praised!
